He got grade C- in high school, never went to university, but he is now rich!

This story proves beyond reasonable doubt that there is no
relationship between school and being rich. Meet William Kibiwot Towett, a 27
years old man from Nakuru. Kibiwot
estimates himself to be worth between 40-45 million Kenyan shillings.
How did he get rich in Kenya at 27?
Kibiwot is humble guy who grew up in Kaptembwa, one of the
slums around Nakuru town. He says that it was not easy growing up. He always wondered
why other people had things that he could not have. His parents could barely afford
the basic needs.
After sitting for his KCPE in 1999 at Mama Ngina Primary
school, he joined a high school in Baringo. He was expelled from the school
when he was in form 1.
After staying at home for 6 months, he joined another school
and managed to complete his high school education. Biology was his worst subject.
He preferred hiding to attending Biology classes. One of his teachers even told
him that he will live a miserable life if he does not get good grades.
Today, Kibiwot is a businessman and farmer. He owns a motor
show room in Nakuru and engages in maize and wheat farming. But how did he
start?
After high school studies, Kibiwot was employed in a car
wash. It is here that he learnt more about cars and got interested in the car selling
business. He bought his first car at Ksh 15 000 from his savings and some money
that his late mother had left. It was an old Peugeot 206. He refurbished it and
later sold it at Ksh 70 000.
Later he saved and bought two cars at Ksh 400 000 each and
sold them both to a single client at 1.2 million shillings. This is how made
his first million.
Kibiwot remembers vividly a client who once told him to get
out of his face because there was nothing he could offer when he was cleaning
cars. 8 years later, he met the guy, who now looks at him from a different
perspective.
Truly, there is nothing you can’t achieve if you put your mind
to it.
An Unbiased & Comprehensive GOtv Review

Kenyans have been on the rush to acquire decoders so that they
can continue using their TVs once the analog switch off is implemented across the
country. However, since all this is new
to most Kenyans, they don’t know which decoder best suits them. One of the decoders available in the Kenyan market
today is GOtv. Here as a comprehensive GOtv review of that will help you figure
out if it suits you.
GOtv is s offered by Multichoice. This makes GOtv a ‘sister’
to DStv. Since DStv subscription is expensive
to most Kenyans, GOtv was designed to serve the people that cannot afford to
pay for DStv.
GoTv Review: The Pros
1. All the channels (40+) are watchable
All the channels available on the GOtv platform are in English.
This makes it possible to watch and understand any program in any of the GOtv channels.
2.A great variety of channels
There is something for every one when you use the go TV
decoder. Here is a list of the channels on GOtv;
3. Affordable
A GOtv decoder goes for Ksh 3999. After buying, you get to
enjoy 1 month free access to go TV plus. The monthly cost for the different packages
offered is as follows;
- Go Tv – Ksh 599
- Go Tv Plus – Ksh 849
You can see the program information when you switch to any channel
(except the local ones). This helps the viewers to know what programs are about
so that they can decide whether they are going to watch or not.
5. You can set reminders
If there is a program that you don’t want to miss, you can
set reminders so that he decoder automatically changes channel when your
program starts. This helps to ensure that you don’t miss any of your favorite
programs.
6. You can view the program line up
GOtv allow you to view the program line-up for a given
channel over the next several days. This makes it possible for viewers to plan
what they are going to watch in advance.
Go TV review: The cons
1. You can only contact customer care through Facebook
At the moment, the only way to contact GOtv customer care is
through Facebook. This can be frustrating especially for people who don’t use Facebook
most times. Although they respond to queries fairly fast, sometimes it takes too
long to get a response.
Why university education in Kenya is losing its value
Posted in
opinion

Unknown
Some people say that you learn so much in the 4 years in high
school than the 4 years in campus. This statement has some truth in it when you
carefully look at the state of education in Kenyan universities. Today, the universities
have turned into businesses. Their focus on money has made most of them lose
track of the main reason why they were established in the first place.
Why are universities admitting more students without upgrading the existing facilities?
Most public universities (if not all) are today are admitting more students than they can handle. How can you increase the number of students every year when you are not building more facilities to accommodate the increasing number of students? Why increase the number when you are not employing more lecturers? How can a university deliver quality education when it is not improving the facilities to handle the increased number of students? How can a university campus that could only comfortably accommodate 3000 students accommodate 10 000 today using the same facilities? These are some of the hard questions that Kenyans should ask the public universities. If Kenyans don’t seek answers to these questions soon, university education will completely lose it value in the coming years.Corruption in public universities
There is so much corruption in Kenyan public universities today.
There are people who use money to get degrees.
There are others who sleep with lecturer’s
to get straight A’s at the end of the year. There are some who fail because
they have a lecturer hates them for some reason.
This does not mean that there are no students who genuinely
work to for their degrees. It just shows that things are not the way they should
be in the higher institutions of learning in Kenya.
In some public universities,
it is possible to have someone else sit for exams on your behalf without anyone
noticing. This is because the majority of lecturers do not know their students
despite teaching them for years. This happens
either because there are too many students in a given class or because the lecture
never comes to teach, he/she only gives out “handouts”.
Should employers judge graduates based on there certificates?
An employer who wants to get the best employees should never
judge people based on what they scored in the university. Looking at the state of education in the universities,
marks don’t really reflect a person’s abilities.
Instead, the employers should put in place a system that measures
a person’s ability. They should test each and every person with a degree to really
know their abilities. A person with a second class degree can be so much better
than a person with a first class degree. Job advertisements with the statement such as “first
class honors or second class upper degree only” only locks out people who may
turn out to be the best employees.

Safaricom, Telecom, Airtel Kenya and YU Lose Millions
Posted in

Safaricom, Telecom, Airtel Kenya and YU will continue
to lose millions due to the emergence of messaging applications. Smartphones
have brought new ways of doing things. Today,
most Kenyans use free applications to make their life easy. One of these applications
is WhatsApp. WhatsApp allows its users to send videos, pictures and text messages
for free. All that is needed is data bundles. The app makes the cost of sending
messages, images and videos by far much cheaper than sending through the normal
networks. This has led to a huge drop on
revenue for telecommunication firms Kenya.
Although Airtel Kenya, Safaricom, Telecom and Essar Kenya
have all expanded their capacity to handle multimedia messages, the number of multimedia
messages being sent by subscriber has constantly been dropping over the recent
years. Statistics from CCK (Communications
commission of Kenya) show that multimedia messages dropped by close to 15%. A report by CCK says that the cause of the
drop may be competition from the messaging application such as WhatsApp and the
high cost of using the MMS services.
WhatsApp allows its users to send messages at a very low
cost. With the tough economic times, one can understand why most Kenyans are
opting to use it. Just with 5MB data, you
can send hundreds of messages to several people. The average cost of 5MB data
in networks in Kenya is KSh 5. When you send MMS over the normal networks, you
can only send 5 messages with Ksh 5.
The apps are hurting telecommunication firms revenue all over
the world, not only in Kenya. Globally, telecommunication companies are losing
close to $10 billion annually due to Internet enabled messaging apps.
Although they hurt the profit of telecommunication firms,
the apps are viewed as a good thing to consumers who now pay less to send text messages,
pictures and videos. If this trend continues, there is no doubt the multimedia messaging
will be dominated apps in future.
Why Payoneer Remains The Best Paypal Withdrawal Method In Kenya

There is a number of ways that can be used to withdraw money from PayPal. They include Payonneer, equity bank and the use of third party websites e.g. e-pay Kenya. Of all these withdrawal methods, Payonneer is by far the best PayPal withdrawal method in Kenya. Here is why Payonneer prepaid debit card stands out from other PayPal withdrawal methods;
1. You will get your money at the lowest rates
Payonneer only
charges $3.15 per withdrawal in any MasterCard branded ATM. The conversion
rate from dollar to shillings using Payonneer usually range between Ksh 82 and
Ksh 84 in most ATMs in Kenya. If you want to withdraw say $100, you will get (100-3.15)*84
= 8135.4. There are no hidden costs or additional
charges.
2. You will have the money in your card in not more than 2 working days
From the moment you submit your withdrawal request on PayPal,
you can be sure that you will have the money loaded to your card after two
working days. You will only have to wait for more days if there is a US holiday
in-between. For example, if you withdraw your money on Tuesday evening, you
will have it in your card by Thursday evening. Some withdrawal methods e.g. the
equity bank withdrawal method makes you wait for up to 10 days. This makes Payonneer
card the best PayPal withdrawal method in Kenya when you need your money
urgently. Some third party website will
help you withdraw your money from your PayPal account in few hours but will charge
you a lot of money.
3. You can become a Payonneer affiliate and earn $25 per referral
Once you start using
the Payonneer prepaid debit card, you will receive an invitation from Payonneer
Inc. to become an affiliate. As an affiliate, you will earn $25 when you refer
a friend. This amount will automatically be sent to your account once the person
you referred to Payonneer withdraws his/her first $100. This benefit is not available
with the other PayPal withdrawal method.
4. It is safe to withdraw money using Payonneer
When you use the Payonneer prepaid MasterCard to withdraw
your money from PayPal, you should never worry about losing your hard earned
cash. Here, you will be dealing with a
reliable and verified company that has built a good reputation over the years. There are many third party websites on the
internet today that have robbed many Kenyans their cash after promising to help
them withdraw from PayPal in Kenya.
5. A fast and efficient customer support department
When you have any queries or questions, it is very easy to
talk to Payonneer customer care support by clicking on the contact link at the
bottom of every page. You will get a response
to your queries as soon as possible.
There is no other withdrawal method that offers many benefits
like the Payonneer method. If you want to learn more about the Payonneer card,

President Uhuru Kenyatta signs a bill that shields insurers from fraudulent claims

A new insurance law that seeks to make payment of claims to victims of road accidents clear has been signed by President Uhuru Kenyatta. The Motor Vehicle Third Party risk bill was one among eight bills that were signed into law on Tuesday, 24th December.
The new law creates a well defined compensation Liability schedule.
It defines the maximum compensation that should be paid with respect to death and
the compensation for lost body parts based on the income levels and the nature
of the injuries sustained by an individual involved in a road accident. This amendment was long awaited by players in
the insurance industry for a long time. The AKI (Association of Kenya Insurance)
has been lobbying for this since 2008.
The law will be a relief to insurers who have for years been
blamed when rogue members of the judiciary, lawyers and doctors settled fraudulent
claims. This new law is seen as a major step towards curbing corruption that has
been prevalent in the insurance industry. Furthermore, it will help to bring a more
equitable way of compensating individuals involved in accidents. This is because unlike the current arrangement
that depends on scientific calculations to come up with the compensation amount,
the new law requires that everyone should be compensated based on their earning
capacity.
Why Kenyan parents will have to dig deeper into their pockets when schools reopen 2014

The holidays will be over soon and parent yet again will be
faced with the reality that they have to find money to take there children to
school early January. They need to have
money to pay school fees and to buy books and other essential things that their
children will need when gong back to school. It is only a week before schools
open for first term!
Next year, parents will have a harder time than they did at
the beginning of 2013. This is becauseof the government decision to tax items
that have always been exempted. This
will automatically lead to a tremendous rise in the cost of living. This has made
many schools increase the school fees charged, some seeing an increase of close
to Ksh 10 000. This means that come January, parents will have to dig deeper
into their pockets.
The value added tax also has a great impact on learning aids
such as books. This further increases the burden that parents will bear when
taking their children to school next year. The government also went ahead and decided to
allow book publishers to increase the price of books by 14% in addition to the 16
% VAT.
Therefore, as you continue enjoying your holidays, make sure
that you have spared an amount that is twice as high as the amount you kept
aside to take your children to school last year. There is no doubt that this time
you are going to spend a lot more than what you spent last year.

The concept of making money online Kenya has been taking root as the years go by. More
and more Kenyans are realizing that it is possible for them to earn
descent income working online. However, most are usually discouraged
when the time to withdraw their money comes. This is because many
companies that offer jobs online pay through PayPal.
PayPal does not have any links with Kenyan banks. This makes it impossible for Kenyans making money online to transfer their earnings to their local banks. Kenya is not listed on PayPal’s website as one of the countries where people can withdraw money directly to local banks. This is very frustrating for Kenyans depending on online jobs to make their daily meal.
There is a small amount you will have to part with when using Payoneer Prepaid Mastercard to withdraw from PayPal in Kenya. Here are the charges:

Kenya . KCB ATMs, I &M bank ATMs, Equity bank ATMs, Pesa Point

It is easy to buy land in Kenya if you follow the right steps. There are many people who have lost their hard earned cash to conmen who had promised to sell them land. The conmen are so smart that you won’t even have a hint that you are about to lose your. To be safe from these people, here is a step by step guide on how to buy land in Kenya;
Step #1. Identify a piece of land
This is the first step when you want to buy land in Kenya. Once you have a piece of land that you like, look for
the agent who is selling it. It will be good for you if you manage to meet the
seller directly. This will help eliminate middlemen.m
Step #2. Make arrangements for an official search
A search will help you confirm the following;
- You are buying land from the legal owner
- The land is free from impediments (e.g. charge by a bank, a caveat hampering sale or any other issue).
In Kenya, an official search can be done at Arthi House (Ministry
of land headquarters) in Nairobi or at the lands office at the district where you
want to buy land. To know where you need to go to have a search done, you have
to check whether the land you intend to buy is registered under LRA (Land Registration
Act) or RTA (Registration of Titles Act). If it’s LRA, then the search can only be done
at the district lands office. If it’s RTA, you have no choice but to go to Arthi
House, Nairobi. You will need a copy of your ID, Pin Certificate and title deed
of the land you intend to buy to perform a search
When you get positive results from the official search, then it
is time to move to the next stage.
Step #3. Obtain rates clearance certificate
This is a very important step when the land you want to buy
is registered under RTA. This certificate
is obtained from the local municipal council. Most people skip this step when buying
land in Kenya only to find out later that they bought a piece of land with
rates arrears that adds up to hundreds of thousands of shillings. Once you have
the rate clearance certificate, proceed to the next step.
Step #4. Ask you lawyer to prepare a sales agreement
Have your lawyer and the lawyer of the seller prepare the
sales agreement. It is also at this stage that you should pay deposit for the
land.
Step #5. Get all the completion documents from the seller
- The completion documents include;
- The original title deed with the name of the seller.
- Three copies of duly executed transfer documents (forms).
- Three passport photos of the seller
- A copy of pin certificate of the seller.
- A copy of the national ID card of the seller
- Rates clearance certificate.
Step #6. Pay the balance
You should only pay the remaining balance when you have confirmed
that you have all the necessary completion documents. Your attorney should confirm that all these
documents are authentic before you go ahead to make payments.
Step #7. File the transfer completion documents at the lands office
As you file the completion documents, make sure that you also
include a copy of your national ID, passport size photos and a copy of your pin
certificate.
After sometime, an inspector will visit the land you bought
for verification purpose. This may take a day or two. In some case, it may take
up to one month. Due to lack of transport in most cases, the buyer has to take
the inspector to the piece of land he/she bought.
Step #8. Stamp duty tax payments
The stamp duty tax is usually between 2% to 4% of the land’s
value. The fees depend on the location of the land. This money should be paid only
to the official account provided by registration of lands office.
Step #9. Issuance of a new title deed
This is the last step when you buy land in Kenya. The title
deed is collected at the lands office either by the buyer or the buyer’s
lawyer.
These steps describe how to buy land in Kenya. There might be
slight variations in some places. Always ask questions when any of these steps
is skipped. Otherwise, you may end up losing your hard earned money to conmen.
